About the Société québécoise du cannabis

The Société québécoise du cannabis (SQDC) is a wholly owned, independently run subsidiary of the Société des alcools du Québec (SAQ). Its mission is to sell cannabis at the retail level in a way that protects public health, the goal being to integrate consumers into the legal cannabis market and keep them in it without actually encouraging cannabis use. The SQDC’s mandate is  social and its top priority is the health and safety of its consumers. Its profits will be remitted to the Cannabis Prevention and Research Fund.

Initially the SQDC plans to open around 20 stores as soon as the federal legislation comes into effect on October 17, 2018. New points of sale will be added through 2020 as determined by market demand. The SQCD will be headquartered in Montreal.

To guarantee that cannabis sales are handled properly, SQDC employees will be given solid training about the product, its uses and effects and responsible consumption. The SQDC will be able to rely on the SAQ’s experience and expertise in this area.
